Interesting thought. There’s a very real possibility that it could now be SpaceX or some other private company servicing Hubble for NASA now that the space agency is now focusing on a lunar return. The mirror is as good as ever, but the electronics could use some upgrading!
NASA wants to let it deorbit and burn. Makes no financial sense to save it and they already cancelled an extension of its life for the same reason. Just been researching it and apparently there is a whole community of space enthusiasts suggesting the same idea so I guess its not as original an idea as I first assumed. Just published an article about it.
As cool as Hubble is, it was last serviced in 2009. The technology it operates on is ancient compared to what we have today.
Elon should go collect it with a Starship and bring it back for the Smithsonian. That would be a good orbital test of the new booster.
